ZDA were commissioned to add an extra floor to the former Woolworths building in the heart of Tonbridge to create a mixed-use scheme comprising residential above shops and restaurants.
The vernacular slate tile was commonly used on other buildings along the High Street so we used this as the dominant material for the proposal and then complemented it with the contrasting secondary, warmer vertical timber finish material. We kept the materials’ palate to a minimum and employed simple, clean yet robust detailing, to provide a building of high quality in both appearance and construction.
