Farnborough ATC & Hangar

Location: Farnborough

Status: Complete 2005

Completed whilst working at 3DReids, the tower and hangar were part of three new family of RIBA award winning buildings put forward for client TAG aviation in a competition winning entry. The challenge had been the constant testing and refinement of ideas, leading to an architecture which is not only heightened in its concept and functionality but also affordable.

The process began with boat builders. In a joint collaboration with a successful luxury yacht building company a suitable cladding system which shared the technology and understanding between two separate professions was developed to deal with the complex geometries demanded. The final solution which responded well to the economic constraints was a simple aluminium diamond interlocking tile cladding solution. The resulting snake skin appearance and shimmering reflections of the cladding gives the complex geometry an added depth of scale when viewed at different angles and distances.
